What Type of Rug is That?

Sometimes when we're perusing a catalog, design magazine, or online site, we come across terms that we may not be completely familiar with. In an effort to make your modern rug shopping experience a little easier, we'll try to clear some of those terms up for you. Rugs come in various sizes, and these sizes are often referred to by specific names or types. You have the carpet, the Dozar, mats, scatter and runners - we will go over these terms in order to be certain that you find exactly what you're looking for. We at ModernCollections.com believe that modern rug shopping should be a fun, exciting process, not a confusing one.

The runner can also be known as a corridor rug. This particular rug typically measures two or three feet across and can go anywhere from seven to twenty feet long. These rugs are used to finish off the look of a hall or stairway. Scatter rugs have been popular for ages. Measuring from two by four feet to four by six feet these rugs are typically found in a vast range of design styles. Placed under chairs or inside an entry way, these durable rugs will add a splash of color right where you need it. Mats are typically reserved for small spaces - entryways or kitchen areas. Mats are small, generally only two by three feet in size and are available in a myriad of designs and colors. Scattered within the home, mats are wonderful and typically inexpensive room brighteners. Rugs that are sized at five by seven are typically known as Dozars. This is a rug making term and one used throughout the industry. Dozar rugs are perfect for directing the gaze to a certain point in the room - dining or seating areas - or can be used to define an area in a larger room. Carpets are the largest of all rugs and typically covers the entire (or almost the entire) floor. Typically any rug greater than eight by ten are considered carpet sized.
