About the Designer:

Harry Bertoia fled ltaly when he was fifteen to study sculpture at the Institute
of Technology of Detroit. In 1937, he became a teacher at the Detroit School of
Arts and Crafts and at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts. During the 40's he started
to design furniture. “Space goes through them,” writes Bertoia about his chairs,
“...looking at them we can notice that they are made by air, like a sculpture.”
He considers chairs like sculptures in the space. He gives a lot of importance
to space, colors and to the metal characteristics. Bertoia as a sculptor turns
his architectural interest toward form and metal. His chair is light and comfortable
with an optional padded seat. Bertoia ranks as one of the most fashionable chairs
designer of the 50's. The careful detailing and feeling of space reflect completely
the aesthetic concern of his architecture. The Bertoia chair designs offer the
perfect expression of technology and creative arts. Today his chairs are well
known all over in the world. |
